A fresh investigation has prompted MPs to urge the government to impose tougher sanctions and cease all trade with Israel, following an attack on a Gaza hospital that killed多名 journalists and medics.
The Independent and Independent Arabia investigation examined the 25 August 2025 incident at Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis. The attack occurred in two phases, eight minutes apart. The initial strike killed Reuters cameraman Hussam al-Masri. A subsequent strike targeted the same stairwell where journalists, medics, and displaced civilians had gathered to assist and report, killing Gaza correspondent Mariam Abu Dagga and at least 19 others.
The investigation, based on 17 eyewitness accounts, testimony from two Israeli whistleblowers, and expert analysis, found evidence that international law experts say points to potential war crimes, including intentionally attacking civilians and launching a disproportionate attack. The military reportedly did not warn the hospital despite having contact details, and surveillance drones were observed monitoring the area between strikes.
The Israeli military stated it “regrets any harm” and denied targeting journalists, later claiming the camera was a Hamas observation post. However, the investigation identified the camera as a Reuters live feed. Two of those killed were identified as a hospital worker and a civil defence member.
In response, Labour MP Rachael Maskell called on the UK government to “take the strongest measures,” including ending all trade and increasing sanctions. Labour peer Baroness Helena Kennedy KC called for an international inquiry into journalist deaths across the region. Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran linked the findings to the need for the International Criminal Court case against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to proceed.
A government spokesperson described the attack as “horrific,” reaffirmed the need to protect civilians and journalists, and stated that Israel must uphold international law and investigate potential breaches. The government noted it has recognised the state of Palestine and suspended trade deal negotiations with Israel.
