Since January 2024, all British citizens living abroad have the right to vote in UK general elections, regardless of the amount of time the have been out of the country.

Ahead of each election, we run voter registration campaigns, to ensure people are aware of their right to vote and are able to exercise it.

But registration is only the start. After the 2024 general election, we identified a number of areas where action is needed, from better awareness of local authorities, to changes to the postal and proxy system, to improved ways of reaching overseas voters.

We presented our findings as oral evidence to the Public Bill Committee on the Representation of the People Bill in March 2026, which you can watch on YouTube or read a transcript of on Hansard. Furthermore, we submitted written evidence to support these arguments.

Labour International is also campaigning to get representation for voters abroad in the form of overseas constituencies. We have a working group on this topic which we encourage members to get involved in by emailing [email protected]
